That sensation has fuelled one of the most repeated claims in the wellness world: that a sauna is “like exercise”, or even a stand-in for it on days you cannot train. It is an appealing idea, and it is not entirely wrong — but the honest answer is more interesting than the slogan.

The comparison rests on a real physiological overlap. Heat forces the heart to work to move blood toward the skin for cooling, and that cardiovascular strain shares features with the strain of moderate exercise. Researchers have measured the response directly, and long-term studies have tied regular sauna use to the kinds of outcomes we usually associate with being fit.

Where the claim breaks down is in the detail. A sauna reproduces some of exercise's signals and none of others, its benefits appear to add to training rather than substitute for it, and not every format of heat delivers the same load. Here is what the data actually shows.

What heat does to your heart

The core of the comparison is heart rate. When you are exposed to intense heat, blood vessels near the skin dilate to shed warmth, blood is redirected toward the surface, and the heart compensates by beating faster and pumping more.
